Ethics and values apply to our personal and professional lives. If you are able to understand and implement values and ethics in everyday practices, you will encourage one’s success in personal and professional careers. Ethics is a concept of one’s actions, which derives from principals of an individual doing what is right not wrong. Velasquez, Andre, Shanks, and Meyer (1987), define ethics as a “well based standard of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues”. Many companies list certain values that dictate what is important for their organization. Likewise, we adopt those values and exhibit them when interacting with other employees, those we serve and through our own actions on the job. Our roadmap for determining ethical behavior is influenced by society, family, church and our community. (NDU, 2009, p. 3) We also learn ethics through the examples of our teachers, peers and fellow employees. We already have core values that have been established in childhood or stated by the organization where we work. Upholding those values, or doing what is considered right or moral, is what we consider to be ethical behavior. The absence of any professional values and ethics can lead to a negative outcome in career success. If a person does not have any professional values and ethics, he or she will probably not be very successful in his or her career because one must respect others in order to be successful in their work or business environment. The Code of Ethics is the professional conduct that governs the profession of Social Work. Each candidate that is licensed by the Board must adhere to these conducts whether or not they are providing services on the telephone, in person and electronically. The Code of Ethics provides guidelines that protect the client, colleagues, and themselves to prevent any unethical standards.
One of the conducts that the Code of Ethics refers to is that as social worker we have an ethical responsibility to the client we serve. In addition, a professional should maintain documentation that accurately reflects the services provided, treatment plans, goals, and contact notes.
